Part of me stayed beneath the ceiling
Only a few hours have passed since Suede's concert at Progresja in Warsaw, and I still have the feeling that part of me remained somewhere beneath the ceiling. My seat was high above the audience. I could see the stage and the people at the same time: Brett Anderson turning every song into a small drama with undiminished intensity, and hundreds of faces returning, for a little over ninety minutes, to memories of their own.
Music and life in the same place
It was an extraordinary perspective, and not only in the literal sense. I watched from above, surrounded by people very close to my heart, listening to a band that has spent more than three decades turning melancholy into something beautiful, then making that beauty faintly unsettling. Evenings when music and life meet at precisely the same point are rare.
The set travelled through almost the band's entire history. There were songs from the newest album, Antidepressants, and the classics without which a Suede concert is difficult to imagine: Animal Nitrate, The Drowners, Trash, Filmstar, Everything Will Flow, and finally Beautiful Ones. The Wild Ones was there too. I knew I would hear it. I simply did not know it would sound quite so devastating.
A moment not made for a phone
It was my first truly large concert in a very long time. An evening that cannot be contained in photographs or phone recordings. There are moments a person does not want to document. You only want to be there. Yesterday's Suede concert was one of them, although with a little help a few important fragments were captured.
Thank you for that evening. To the people beside me, to the band, to Warsaw, and to the kind of chance that occasionally, without warning, lets a person find themselves exactly where they are meant to be.
