Three days with what remains
Over the May holiday weekend from 1 to 3 May 2026, Radio 357 gave its airwaves to Polish music in a particular way. The sixth Polish Top asked the station's patrons to choose the most important Polish songs of all time.
This was not an ordinary chart. It was a collective declaration of what shaped us, what returns in quiet moments and what can still be hummed years later after the title has been forgotten. Voting set a new record: 21,319 patrons decided which songs deserved to be heard in this special sequence, more than ever before.
The broadcast began at nine in the morning on 1 May and continued for three full days. Rather than only a top hundred, listeners heard more than 300 of the highest-scoring tracks. The range stretched from absolute canon through deep album cuts to songs more at home in a niche than on a large stage, from sung poetry and rock to music that resists a single drawer. Radio 357 traditionally leaves room for the full width of Polish music.
A final beneath the stars
On Sunday 3 May, the final had a physical as well as broadcast form. The leading songs were played live from the Kepler Science Centre and Venus Planetarium in Zielona Góra. Patrons met the station there, while a video broadcast began on the Radio 357 website at seven in the evening. The organisers promised cosmic energy, a frenzy of celestial bodies and an avenue of stars, fitting language for a day of songs that form part of many listeners' personal biographies.
Why it matters
At a time when algorithms offer another thirty seconds of something similar, a public vote can act like an anchor. It reminds us that some songs need no constant refresh because they grew into emotional memory long ago. Some accompanied difficult moments, others became a soundtrack to first love, childhood or a student flat.
Tony Muzyki usually writes about music heard attentively, often outside the top positions but capable of staying for years. The Polish Top is an interesting counterpoint. It reveals what remains when thousands of people independently name the tracks that moved something deep inside them.
This is not about objective bestness. It is about subjective importance. That is why such lists can be moving even when your personal number one finishes at 187.
Practical information from the 2026 broadcast
- The programme ran from 1 May at 9:00 through the entire weekend.
- It was available through the Radio 357 app and website, with podcasts after transmission.
- The live final took place in Zielona Góra on 3 May with a video stream from 19:00.
- More than 300 tracks offered three days inside a broad panorama of Polish music.
During those days I mainly listened and placed writing second. Sometimes it is necessary to let sound carry you, particularly when familiar music still feels different on every return.
After the weekend, the writing resumed. For those three days, the important thing was attentive listening and a small celebration of Polish music, not necessarily fashionable now, but long present inside us.
