Lost cause does not simply mean a case that has been defeated. The obvious Polish translation captures the result but loses the process and the weight of the decision. In English, it names the moment when you stop believing something makes sense, even though technically nothing has ended yet.
It sounds like a verdict delivered without ceremony, cold rather than dramatic. There is no scream or grand finale, only the quiet recognition that further action will change nothing. That is why the expression belongs so naturally in alternative music. It does not describe the catastrophe but the awareness that follows a catastrophe which has already taken place. No pathos, no raised voice, no need to convince anybody.
One phrase, several temperatures
In other languages, the meaning shifts. It does not disappear, but its temperature changes. German offers hoffnungsloser Fall, literally a case without hope, more clinical than emotional. It sounds like a diagnosis, not a verdict. French has cause perdue, carrying more romance and history, as though the thing once mattered. It remains soft, almost elegant, even while speaking of an ending.
The Latin causa perdita is dry, closed and nearly administrative. Emotion is gone. Only a fact written down forever remains. Ukrainian gives us безнадійна справа, beznadiina sprava. The absence of hope can be heard clearly, yet something human survives inside it, not quite extinguished. It sounds difficult, but not necessarily final.
Spanish causa perdida sits close to the French expression but feels more direct. It has a shadow of tragedy and a certain plain inevitability. Dutch verloren zaak may be the most neutral of all. It reports the outcome without carrying quite the same weight.
And here it becomes interesting. In most languages the phrase describes a condition or an outcome. In English, lost cause works differently. It is not only what happened, but the instant when somebody stops trying. Not because they must. Because they already know.
That is precisely where Radiohead's A Moon Shaped Pool begins. Not at the collapse, but at the acknowledgement that the collapse was unavoidable. The album does not sound as though it is building anything. It withdraws, reduces and leaves things unfinished, as if somebody no longer believes they are worth completing. This is the same lost cause, written in sound.
Jonny Greenwood's strings are not decoration. They are tension unable to resolve. In Burn the Witch they drag everything forward but take it nowhere. This is not a climax. It is the perpetual approach to something that will not happen. Let us move through the record track by track and listen to the lost cause spreading across its atmosphere.
Burn the Witch
This is the moment when the lost cause has not yet been named but is already at work. A relationship forms in an atmosphere of control and suspicion, so it never has a chance to develop. The rules ensure that every movement produces guilt. This is not the beginning of a story. It is the beginning of an ending already programmed into the system.
Daydreaming
The lost cause disguises itself as movement and activity. A person takes one step after another without coming any closer to a solution. It resembles an attempt to save the situation, but it is merely a way of postponing the truth. The more doorways we cross, the more certain it becomes that nothing will change.
Decks Dark
The first signal arrives that this will not work. It is immediately covered by something lighter so nobody has to react. Here the lost cause operates as denial. Everything sways but remains standing because nobody is willing to stop it.
Desert Island Disk
The lost cause assumes the shape of escape. A change of place and narrative produces a temporary feeling of control. This is the instant when a person tells himself that things can be different. In practice, he has carried the same problem into different surroundings.
Ful Stop
Here the lost cause is finally named, although far too late. One concrete sentence closes every previous attempt. There is no longer room for negotiation or correction. Understanding has overtaken any action that could follow it.
Glass Eyes
Once the thing has been named, pure awareness arrives. The lost cause ceases to be an emotion and becomes a fact. Interpretation and defence fall away. Only observation remains. It is one of the record's most honest moments.
Identikit
The lost cause hardens into a pattern, too simple to change anything and recognised too late to rescue it. A person sees what he is doing wrong but cannot interrupt it. Awareness does not produce change, only repetition. Defeat becomes a habit.
The Numbers
An attempt is made to step outside the situation. The lost cause is covered with something larger and more universal. It works only on the surface because it never touches the heart of the problem. The problem leaves our field of vision but does not cease to exist.
Present Tense
The lost cause returns to the centre of the relationship. The form suggests that everything is still happening, but the substance says otherwise. Closeness turns out to be a kind of disorientation, not a solution. It is no longer possible to pretend this works.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor Rich Man Poor Man Beggar Man Thief
The lost cause spills across everything. Thoughts lose their structure and lead to no conclusion. The system keeps operating but produces no meaning. Even the illusion of control has gone.
True Love Waits
At the end, the lost cause is reduced to a single sentence. This is no attempt at repair, only a repetition of what was never heard. An echo remains, not a conversation.
From this perspective, the lost cause is neither the theme of one song nor the property of one phrase. It is written into the way this album breathes. No tension leads towards resolution. No melody longs to be fulfilled. No arrangement strives for completeness. There is only consequence.
The music knows before the words do. That is why it tries to save nothing.
