I remember the moment exactly. Several years ago I found Vérité. First came the sound, then I played the video and my jaw simply dropped. It was not merely pretty. Beauty was obvious, but not in the banal sense. You could not stop looking because something else seemed to be moving behind it.
She appeared intelligent and fully aware, as though she knew precisely what she was doing with the image, the music and you. A woman singing in French, yet I suddenly felt I understood everything. Eyes, mind, ears and heart switched on at once. Finally came the hands, trying somehow to describe it.
Not all music enters. This goes too deep
Claire Laffut is a Belgian artist born in Namur in 1994. Before music, she passed through fashion, art and visual projects of her own. She does not make songs to play behind the cleaning. With this kind of artist you suddenly notice that you have been sitting and staring, without knowing where, because you are simply inside.
Her sound is soft and sensual but threaded with unease, like a conversation beginning innocently and ending somewhere you never expected. That is no accident. From the start, she built a world rather than only a sound.
From modelling into a world of her own
Before the music came fashion, art and her temporary tattoo brand. In 2013, she appeared on the cover of Elle Belgique, worked with major brands and later moved to Paris. This matters because nothing in her work is an accessory. Image, body, aesthetic and music connect. Her work feels coherent even before you can name why.
Vérité and Mojo: the beginning of something larger
Vérité in 2018 was the first moment the wider world paid attention. The single later appeared on the Mojo EP, establishing the foundations of her identity as an artist. Everything is already there: sensuality, gentle unease and a particular softness that draws you in without offering complete comfort. These are not tracks to tick off a list. They are tracks to fall into.
Bleu: emotions in colour
The 2021 debut album Bleu is not a collection of singles but a complete vision, inspired by the colour blue, youth and everything surrounding it, from first relationships to disorientation. Afro and Latin influences give the whole its pulse. Crucially, each song connects to an image or visual form. This is not music only for listening but a world one enters.
No accident
Behind it is a childhood filled with music and records, with influences ranging from electronic sounds to African rhythms naturally absorbed into her style. Nothing sounds made to satisfy playlists. It sounds like something assembled inside her over many years. That is why it works.
Perhaps this is the point
Not to analyse everything, but to encounter one song and feel something switch on. For me, it was Vérité. Every return still produces exactly the same feeling.
