Why did the flowers wilt today?
It does not sound like a question for somebody else. It is a person speaking to himself in a flat that was shared only moments ago. In such moments, everything changes: the cup on the table, an open window, a coat on the chair. Even the flowers suddenly appear tired.
That is why the lyric is so powerful. Breakout does not describe a grand drama. There is no scream, accusation or theatrical suffering. There is something worse: a world from which the air has slowly escaped.
Tadeusz Nalepa understood the emotions that arrive only after everything. Not during the argument or the slamming door, but later, when a person is alone with ordinary objects and discovers that they can turn against him too, because each remembers.
The broken stem
The wilted flowers are a brilliant allegory. They did not die suddenly. They merely stopped receiving what they needed, like a person after losing somebody around whom the rhythm of life had been built. He remains upright, functioning, telling people that everything is fine. Somewhere inside, the stem is already broken.
The most painful idea is not simply that she left, but that she took something with her, perhaps even the scent of the flowers. As if a person could carry the temperature of life out of a flat. The walls remain, the streets continue to exist, but the meaning has evaporated.
The lyric is astonishingly economical. Nalepa never labels the emotion as solitude, pain or longing. He shows the landscape after an emotional fire: dead birds, dead people and rain washing away the traces. The listener completes the rest because this condition is already familiar.
The harmonica that cannot sleep
Something more than an instrument is crying in the background. The harmonica sounds like a night that cannot be slept through, a walk across an empty city when a person has no destination and is merely waiting out their thoughts. There is no blues display in it, only exhaustion, cold and surrender, the sound of somebody sitting in darkness without switching on the light because no reason can be found.
Nalepa was authentic in precisely this way. He never performed suffering or converted it into an aesthetic. He sang as though the words had really visited him late at night when the flat became too quiet.
Alone in a city that did not notice
The declaration of being alone in the city contains no pathos. It is the emptiness of somebody at the window, watching the world remain entirely unmoved by his catastrophe. People still run somewhere, trams continue, somebody buys bread, somebody returns from work and somebody laughs. For him, everything has wilted.
That may be why the song still works after so many years. Everyone eventually becomes one of those flowers. For a while we continue trying to look normal, upright in the water and pretending everything remains in its place.
But we already know nobody is going to change the water.
